As a 20+ year small business owner, I've done my fair share of bookkeeping.  I have a natural love of numbers, math, and puzzles, which makes me an obvious fit for our family businesses bookkeeper.  So, if I could do it, why should you hire a bookkeeper? Why not just handle it yourself?

I'm glad you asked.

Five years ago, we started using QuickBooks Online for my husband's business. I had previous experience with Quicken (which is nothing like QuickBooks), and I thought, "I can handle this." I had been using a fairly simple budgeting software to reconcile and classify transactions.

Right before tax season each year I would download an excel file of the year's numbers and meticulously scan them to ensure everything was appropriately categorized.  Then, I would create a new spreadsheet with all the categorizes I knew the tax accountant would need.  I even created my own Profit & Loss sheet. This process usually took several days of work.

When I started using QuickBooks, I was overwhelmed. Why? Because QuickBooks is a sophisticated system designed to be used by service industries, retailers, lawyers, chiropractors, and everything in between.  There are a lot of tools, and it requires a lot of learning. No worries, I was a 4.0 student who had been doing her own business bookkeeping for 20+ years. I could handle this. Um, no.

I used QBO for Payroll to ensure I was correctly filing and paying taxes and our workers. Then, I hopped right back on to that simpler software I had been using all those years, until 2020 happened. It was then that I realized my chewing gum and bailing wire approach to bookkeeping would no longer work for our growing business.

As someone who has taken and passed the QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor exam, I can tell you that my college Medical Terminology exams were easier to pass. There is a learning curve to QBO.
